Historic Tablet-Weaving - full day beginner workshop
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Historic Tablet-Weaving - full day beginner workshopTime: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
You will learn the technique of this centuries-old, tablet rotation weaving skill to produce a decorative ‘threaded-in’ braid, including how to maintain warp tension and manage weft selvedges. The tablet weaving workshop introduces a low-tech way of creating narrow bands and braids which can be used to form colourful ribbons, laces, bookmarks, bracelets and much more. Bands can be sewn together to make larger pieces.
We will be working in cotton perle in order to gain understanding of the weaving techniques through a ‘user-friendly’ fibre.
This is an adult beginner’s workshop and includes materials including the tablets used during the workshop which you will be able to take home. Subsequent workshops can be offered dependent on interest, to deal with how to read a tablet-weave pattern draft, setting up your own warp from scratch, weaving with other fibres such as wool, silk or linen, and designing your own patterns. Additional workshops offered by the Silkewoman on request include Fingerloop braiding, Period Embroidery Techniques, Goldwork Embroidery, and Netting as well as period specific plain hand-sewing techniques

25Medieval Book Binding Workshop - Half Day
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Medieval Book Binding Workshop - Half DayTime: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
An opportunity to make a soft leather covered book known as a Suffolk Book from the 14th century, commonly used by medieval merchants. All materials and equipment supplied and you will have a completed book to take home and use as a sketchbook or perhaps a notebook. Suitable for Beginners and those over 15 years old. The workshop takes place in the upper level of the Centre, accessed via a set of wooden stairs which are fairly steep. You can expect medieval experiences of sounds and smells as the building is a visitor centre where other crafts and skills take place on the ground floor. Due to the character of the building there are no toilet facilities, however, there are public toilets a few strides away. There is a pay and display car park close to the building. You may like to take advantage of the many eateries in the town including cafes and pubs. There is a good pizzeria almost opposite the building.
