Spend a day with the Wheat Weaver at the fascinating Sandwich Medieval Centre learning the ancient craft of corn dolly weaving.
About this event
Celebrate the harvest by learning the ancient techniques of wheat weaving to make corn dollies, essential components of the harvest ritual. We will start with simple patterns to gain confidence in holding and manipulating the straw and getting the feel of the material. Then, using what has been learned together with more complex plaits, you will be able to create several beautiful corn dollies to take away with you. Having a full day allows us to experiment with more complex designs but because we start off gently this course is suitable for both beginners and improvers. All materials and tools will be provided. COVID: Group size will be kept small to ensure participants may have individual help when required and so that we can err on the side of caution with regard to any restrictions in place at the time of the workshop. Dress for draughty! Our medieval building is unheated and our doors are always open but we will be working upstairs where it is more cosy. It can be cool even in summer, however. Parking and public toilets are available in the adjacent council car park on Sandwich Quay. There are also numerous restaurants, coffee shops and pubs nearby or you can bring a packed lunch to enjoy on the quayside.
